Along with getting your sweat on in the morning, new research says exercise sprints are effective for making smarter food choices throughout the day.
A Recent Study on Exercise Sprints, Interval Training, and Food Choices:
According to a recent study published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, participants who incorporated exercise sprints into their workout routine were more likely to make healthier food choices post-workout.
The study included 40 physically inactive men and women who participated in either sprint-interval exercise (SIT) or moderate-intensity continuous exercise (jogging or riding a stationary bike).
Researchers examined the effect of SIT and psychological need: how exercise affected post-workout appetite and energy intake.
Here’s What They Found:
“Participants enjoyed the sprint-interval exercise more than the moderate-intensity continuous exercise, even though it required more exertion, and led to a higher heart rate and higher blood lactate,” said lead author Natalya Beer.
Even more interesting, the hunger hormone ghrelin was lower after the sprint interval exercise, she added. And the participants also ate less food in the supportive social environment.
While it’s challenging to exercise and make smart eating choices on a regular basis, this study shows that short exercise sprints will naturally help you in both areas.
Beer specifically recommends High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) compared to moderate-intensity continuous exercise such as jogging or riding a stationary bike.
